What Does a DALI Gateway Do? KNX & DALI Dual-System Integration

Many people working on building intelligent lighting are confused: Why use DALI if we already have KNX? Why do we need a gateway after installing DALI?

Simply put, these two are not substitutes, but complementary partners. The DALI gateway is the core component to connect them together.

Let’s clarify their roles: KNX is a universal building control bus, handling the interconnection of lighting, curtains, air conditioning, security and other systems across the whole building. DALI is a dedicated digital lighting control bus, featuring precise dimming, individual lamp addressing, status feedback and color temperature adjustment.

Their communication protocols are incompatible. The DALI gateway acts as a "protocol translator". It allows KNX scene commands to be accurately sent to every DALI luminaire, while lamp status, brightness and fault information can also be fed back to the KNX system.

Why not just use KNX for dimming? KNX dimming mostly relies on 0-10V analogue signals with limited precision, and cannot provide individual lamp fault feedback. A pure DALI system can only manage lighting, and cannot create full-scene linkage with air conditioning, curtains or access control.

Combining both systems enables one-touch scene switching for the whole building, alongside fine dimming, energy consumption monitoring and fault warning for every single light.

Selection tips: Choose a single-channel gateway for a small area with one DALI line, and a dual-channel gateway for large spaces with multiple circuits. For projects requiring high data security, pick the main module with KNX Data Secure, which supports expansion of more DALI circuits.
