Why Do Lighting Scenarios Fail to Restore Automatically After Power Restoration on a KNX System?

Many hotels, office buildings, meeting rooms and exhibition halls encounter this issue: after a power cut and subsequent power restoration on the KNX system, the lights can turn back on, yet the previous lighting scenarios are not restored.

This is not necessarily a hardware fault. More often than not, the system lacks clear instructions defining which operating state to resume after power recovery.

KNX devices support power-failure recovery functions, but this logic is not enabled by default.

The outcome depends on several key factors:

• Whether the device retains its state prior to power failure
• Whether power-recovery logic is programmed in the application software
• Stability of the bus power supply
• Proper online status of lighting actuators
• Interlock logics with higher priority such as fire alarm, door lock and ventilation control

If only manual scene control is programmed without dedicated triggers for power restoration, the system will revert to the default state after reboot.

When commissioning KNX projects, do not only test normal scene activation. Power cut and recovery testing is mandatory.

Recommended verification checklist:

• Stability of mains and KNX bus power supply
• Confirm all lighting actuators go online normally
• Define which preset scenes need automatic recovery
• Check if fire safety interlocks block automatic restoration
• Ensure consistent recovery behaviour across all floors and zones

Automatic scene recovery cannot be guessed by devices; the system must be explicitly instructed via programming.
