Latest company blog about What is KNX Bus & Which Projects Should Adopt It?

KNX bus uses a single twisted pair cable to connect lighting, curtains and HVAC terminals across the whole building. It does not rely on one central host for command. Each device has built-in logic, and signals travel on the same bus line.

The biggest difference from traditional centralized control: if the central host fails, the entire building system collapses. For KNX, when one device breaks down, only the circuits it controls are affected. This is critical for sites such as hospitals and schools where full-floor blackouts must be avoided.

It is also easy to modify. To add one circuit, simply connect the device to the nearest bus branch. No changes to the main bus or rewiring required. This saves substantial renovation costs for multi-tenant malls and office buildings with frequent layout adjustments.

Suitable Projects

① Multi-floor, multi-tenant commercial complexes ② Large quantities of rooms with identical functions (hotel guest rooms, chain stores) ③ Systems required to run locally; full shutdown caused by upper computer failure is unacceptable (hospitals, schools, conference centers) ④ Phased deployment with future expansion of control points

Less Suitable Projects

  • Small standalone buildings with very few control points; traditional control is more cost-effective
  • Projects requiring only energy monitoring without control: metering and sensor networks suffice
  • Process segments demanding high-speed closed-loop control — this belongs to PLC

Choosing KNX is not about pursuing high-end features. It means one faulty unit will not disrupt others.
