KNX Blind Actuator Selection Guide
News Detail

Improper selection of KNX blind actuators will cause inaccurate movement or even motor burnout. Confirm the following three key points before purchasing.

1. Confirm Blind Type First
  • Curtain (side-opening): Use dedicated curtain actuators to control motor forward/reverse rotation. Travel is set by time, widely used for floor-to-ceiling windows and partition curtains.
  • Roller blind (up-down): Use roller blind actuators. Travel limits are configured via timing or position sensors.
  • Venetian blind: The most complex type. The actuator needs two independent control channels: one for lifting/lowering, the other for blade angle adjustment. Verify angle control support during selection.

If multiple blind types are used in one project, match them with corresponding actuators respectively.

2. Proper Torque Matching

The rated torque (Nm) of the actuator must be no less than the required torque of the blind motor.

  • Light residential curtains: Below 6 Nm is sufficient.
  • Heavy blackout curtains & large engineering curtains: 10 Nm or above; up to 20 Nm for large commercial projects.

Insufficient torque will trigger overheating protection or burn out the actuator. Oversized torque works fine but costs more. When in doubt, choose a higher specification instead of cutting costs.

3. Travel Setting & Linkage Logic
  • Timing setting: The simplest solution. Input the full travel duration into ETS, ideal for straight-track side-opening curtains.
  • Position feedback: High-end actuators support 0-100% position feedback for precise positioning (e.g., adjust curtains to 40% opening for sunshade), perfect for hotel rooms and office daylight control.
Common Linkage Scenarios
  • Light sensor + Blinds: Auto-close blinds when outdoor illuminance exceeds 500 lux.
  • Wind speed sensor + External sun blinds: Auto-retract blinds when wind speed exceeds the threshold to prevent damage.
  • Scene buttons: One-touch "Away" mode to fully retract all blinds; "Cinema" mode to partially close blinds and dim lights simultaneously.

All linkage logic is configured in ETS. Plan the control scheme in advance to avoid rewiring after installation.
