Bus or Wireless for commercial projects?

It is not an either-or choice. Select solutions for commercial projects based on three criteria.

① How many circuits need simultaneous control Bus devices connect to the same cable; hundreds of circuits operate synchronously without command loss. Wireless relies on gateways for relay. Packet loss and latency occur when dozens or hundreds of points activate at the same time. Whole-floor scene switching in shopping malls and hotels often hits this limitation.

② Who will replace the batteries Wireless panels and sensors run on batteries. For hundreds of points across one building, battery replacement is required every two years, and this labor cost is rarely budgeted. Bus devices draw power from the cable and require no maintenance after installation.

③ Is integration with building controls required Choose bus systems if integration with BMS, fire alarm and HVAC is needed. KNX is an open standard with ready-made interfaces. Most wireless systems use closed ecosystems; integration requires extra gateways with reduced functionality.

One often-overlooked factor: concrete walls and metal ceilings in commercial buildings absorb wireless signals. Coverage cannot be accurately calculated at the design stage, requiring on-site testing and additional gateways.

Decision Rule

Go with bus if there are over 50 circuits, or integration with BMS is required. Wireless works for single rooms, local retrofits without rewiring, small point counts and no system integration needs.

Wireless truly shines for exhibitions, small retail stores, and adding extra points locally to an existing bus system. It saves effort where cable trenching is not feasible.
