What Is the Function of KNX Gateway KNX/IP Router?
When KNX projects scale up, engineers often encounter issues such as severe bus communication latency, failed remote debugging access, and lagged linkage across multiple zones. The root cause is usually relying solely on USB interfaces without deploying a KNX/IP Router. Though this module looks unremarkable, it solves the four most troublesome pain points in large-scale projects.
A single segment of KNX twisted-pair cable has a maximum length of 700 meters; line couplers are mandatory once exceeding this range. However, the distance between separate buildings in a campus often stretches hundreds of meters, making twisted-pair wiring impractical. The IP Router encapsulates KNX telegrams into IP data packets for transmission over Ethernet, completely eliminating distance limits. A single network cable is enough to connect two buildings.
Large projects feature massive quantities of devices that cannot be accommodated on one single TP line, requiring multiple split segments. Acting as a high-performance line coupler, the IP Router aggregates all TP lines for unified scheduling on the IP backbone. Telegrams travel far faster over the IP backbone than the TP bus, cutting cross-segment linkage latency from seconds down to milliseconds.
USB interfaces require physical plug-in beside the bus power supply, forcing engineers to work on site. After the IP Router connects to the local area network, technicians can remotely access the KNX bus via ETS software from the office, adjust parameters, download project programs and monitor group objects without business trips. For maintenance teams, this single feature alone offsets the cost of the module.
The IP Router supports telegram filtering and custom routing policies. It only forwards group address telegrams that need cross-segment transmission to the IP backbone, while local control telegrams stay processed within the original TP line. Bus load is significantly lowered to boost overall communication stability, with outstanding performance in high-frequency control scenarios.
Two mainstream products are available on the market: KNX/IP Interface and KNX/IP Router, with distinct functions, so avoid wrong purchases.
